Options for Creating/Building a Wedding Website

You create a wedding website in much the same way as any website but Wedding websites are a little different than a standard site in that:

  • They are usually temporary Websites that are in place for 6-12 months prior to the wedding and 6-12 months after the wedding.
  • They are usually built by people who have no real interest in building a Website other than for their wedding and hence they need to be created simply and easily.

There are three main ways to create your wedding website:

  • Have it built by a web designer
  • Use a template website provider
  • Build Your Own

Have it built by a web designer

This is the most expensive option and probably the most difficult one to manage unless your designer is very flexible in his approach as the website will require frequent updates both before and after the wedding.

If you take this approach make sure that you cost this in.

Use a Template Website Provider

This is probably the easiest and cheapest solution. With most you get a variety of wedding themes and all of the standard functions like RSVP form, guestbook are provided.

However you cannot usually customise it meaning if the function isn't part of the template you can't have it.

There are many companies like Wedding Window  providing template sites some good and some bad, but they all have the following advantages/disadvantages.

Advantages
  • They make it Easy to create website.
  • All of the basic functionality is provided.
  • Low cost
Disadvantages
  • You cannot customise the site
  • If you want functionality that isn't provided you can't have it.
  • The site is limited to the wedding hence it is usually only live for a few years.

Build Your Own

This is technically the more demanding option but by far the most flexible

Advantages
  • You can customise the site as much as you want
  • You can add the functionality that you want.
  • The site isn't limited to the wedding. You can easily transform it to a family site containing holidays, christenings, birthdays, graduation etc.
  • Costs are generally less than a template site
Disadvantages
  • You need slightly more technical knowledge but that can be minimised by choosing the right platform.
