Your Website Theme

 Firstly the term website theme is used for referring to different website aspects.

• Website subject/topic/niche
• Website style/colour scheme and layout ( see Choosing Your Site Style or Theme)

The one I will address here is the website subject, i.e. What is the website about.

Unless you are going to pay for web traffic then the main source of traffic will come from the search engines.

Your choice of Website theme/niche will be one of the main factors determining the ease of achieving high Website ranking and with it free search engine traffic.

Today all the major search engines appear to group websites based on their website theme.

Therefore if you want to be successful with your website at the search engines then the search engines should easily be able to determine the what your site is about.

The most common mistake people make when making their first web site is to, either choose too general a theme, or no theme at all.

 Because of the size of the Internet there is no point trying to make a Website based on general themes like Software, Fashion, Fitness, Health. There are too many other larger companies competing in those areas.

The idea of a theme is no different from what we encounter in everyday life. except we call them professions or trades. What you are looking for is to find an area  where the competition isn't so stiff, and yet the demand is sufficiently high-- a niche.

In order to do that we need to find out what people are looking for in our area ( the demand ) and then find out how many Websites currently cater for that area (the supply).

Themes and Niches

These two words are used almost interchangeably when talking about web sites. I tend to use the term theme to describe a general area and niche for a more specific one.

Which Theme?

This is the first question you need to address when making your website. Your choice of website theme will be crucial for achieving success on the Internet.
