When making a website you try to make web pages that match the keywords that people enter into the search engines in order to search for the particular product or service that your website offers.

Your success in targeting the  keywords that people enter when searching and how you use those keywords determines how well your page ranks, and in turn, the number of visitors that the search engines send you.

Keyword Phrases

Don't use single keywords but keyword phrases i.e. Making a website not website. Most searches are for phrases and not single keywords.

Plurals and Singulars

Most search engine give different results for singular and a plural. Therefore it is important to know which is being searched for.

Sometimes its obvious others you need to consult tools like Wordtracker.

 In either case its a good idea to target both variants on the same page with emphasis on the most searched i.e. the singular variant or the plural.

 Brainstorm and Jumble the Keyword Phrases

Just because you search for making a website it doesn't mean everyone else will. So try to think of alternatives like:

Use Synonyms

Synonyms are different words with similar or identical meanings and are interchangeable. Synonyms for make are:

You can find them at http://www.synonym.com. Keyword tools like wordtracker and Google keywords will show them as well.

Common Misspellings

When entering keywords many people make spelling mistakes by targeting these common mistakes you can attract these visitors to you site or to your advert.

You can include some common misspellings in your keyword meta tags but they are difficult to include in the body text ( unless accidentally).

Title Tag ,Opening Headline and Opening Paragraph

Include your main keywords in the title tag, opening H1 or H2 tag, preferably twice but no more. Usually the title tag and opening headline are the same. They are certainly very similar.

Opening Paragraph

Use the main keywords in the opening paragraph and least once but preferably twice but no more and also include secondary keywords.

Meta Description

Include your keywords in the meta description along with closely related keywords.

Use it but limit to no more than 20 keywords and avoid keyword spamming in this tag.

Avoid Keyword Spamming in Body Text

Excessive use of keywords is termed keyword spamming and you might get penalised so don't do it.

A quick check is that if what you write doesn't read well then it is probably over optimised for keywords.

Final Paragraph

Use the main keywords and variations near the end of the article text in the final paragraph.

Links

Use the Keywords in links on the page (outgoing ) and in links (incoming) to the page.

Bold Text and Sub Headlines

If possible add extra emphasis to the keywords by including them in bold text on the page and in sub headlines like h3,h4 tags.

Domain Name

Use your keywords in the domain name if possible. This does have a noticeable effect on ranking.

Page Names

Use keywords in page names and separate them with an hyphen. Page names should be similar to title tag.
