Editors Desk

Welcome the the June newsletter.
I've finally made a start with the wedding website case study. I want to progress it a little further before I start the business case study.
You can find it here. It's taken a little longer as I also developed a commenting script, like you find in blogs, so that I could get feedback without having to send you to a blog page.
l'll be making the script available as a free download when I've tidied it up, and have had the chance to test it properly.
For those of you who aren't subscribed to the blog you may have missed my post on A blog or website ?- Wordpress or SBI?-. If you're wondering whether you need a website or what a blog is or are generally unsure, then you should find the post of interest.
Checking your Web Page
Mistakes on web pages are common. However you can avoid many of the common web page errors by following this simple quick web page check list before and after you upload your web pages.
Naming Your Web Pages
Many newcomers to the web find it very confusing when it comes to naming their files and wonder if the names make any difference.
If your unsure as whether or not you should be using a .htm or .html file extension or what a .php file extension means. Or if you find yourself naming pages page1.htm or similar then you should take a look at web page names.
Website FAQs and Tips
Apache PHP and MYSQL on Your Local PC
Do you want to
practise with php and Mysql? If you do you can
install them along with Apache on your home PC
and create your website locally.
It is ideal for testing but installing them manually was a real pain. There is however an easy way using called Xampp for windows from apache friends which makes the install a matter of a few mouse clicks.
Testing your Page Load Times

If you are worried about how long it takes to load your web page then you can try this online web page speed test tool
Question 1 : My web Pages are .htm can I run php scripts.
Answer:
In last weeks questions we covered page renaming.
Many webmasters don't use php because they don't want to rename all their existing web pages to .php from .htm or .html.
But you don't need to. On Apache servers you can use the .htaccess file to tell the Apache server to treat any file as if it was a .php file.
It varies according to the implementation depedning on how php is implemented (as cgi or apache module) but on
1and1 Uk servers you add the following line to the .htaccess file:
AddType x-mapp-php4 .html .htm
on Bluehost add the following
AddHandler application/x-httpd-php .html .htm
Question 2 : How Do I check if my site has been indexed.
Answer:
How do you check whether or not you site has been indexed? For Google, MSN and yahoo you type the following in the search box:
site:www.mysite.com
This will give you a list of all the pages that Google/Yahoo/MSN has indexed on your site.
Books
Online Tutorials are fine for learning the basics, but I find that when you need to get down to some serious study then a book is usually better. I tend to use them as a quick reference when I need to do something.
You will find a huge selection of books at Amazon:
