An Introduction to Email-Marketing for Small Businesses

Permission based Email marketing is basically the sending of emails to existing or potential customers after having first requesting permission to do so.

Permission is obtained by having the customer agree to receive email, usually by using an opt-in email list, and usually from a website, but they could be obtained manually (at a trade fair for example)..

There are many reasons for sending customers email but the main reasons are :

  • Increasing customer loyalty
  • Promoting products
  • Promoting events
  • Promoting the business

Email Marketing has many attractions for businesses, especially small businesses they are:

  • Cost- Much less expensive that printed media
  • Can be automated .
  • Can lead to direct sales
  • Easy Tracked - No other form of promotion can be so easily tracked
  • Can be used to open two way dialogue
  • Instantaneous
  • No geographic constraints/costs- i.e. It doesn't matter if the recipient is in China or England or America.

Email Marketing doesn't have to involve huge set up costs and doesn't need to be done by professional marketing people to be effective.

If you have ever bought anything from Amazon or many large online retailers you will see just how simple the marketing emails are (see screenshot)
