Email, Promotional Emails and Ecommerce/Shopping Websites


Email is used on many occasions during the online ordering/fulfilment process as well as in post sales for marketing purposes.

Therefore it is important to examine the email capabilities of shopping cart solutions. The following lists the email types that your system may support.

  • Email notification of sale.
  • Email notification of shipment.
  • Email notification of delivery.
  • Email notification of delays/problems/refunds etc.
  • Promotional emails

All systems support sale notification and most will cover shipment etc but not all systems cover promotional emails otherwise known as email marketing.

If you have purchased anything online especially from the big stores like Amazon you will have received emails telling you about additional products that you may be interested in and you may, like myself have made additional purchases in response to those emails.

Because of its importance I would recommend you look for a shopping cart system that supports them. If yours doesn't (many don't), then you will need to export your email list and use an external email marketing tool (often a much cheaper solution).

 

Making Your Automated Emails Professional

Most systems will let you customize your auto generated emails (like order notifications). This is a very powerful feature and you should ensure that you make the most of it to make a good impression and to help the customer in advance.

A good way of fining out what should go in these emails is to take a closer look at the emails you have received from online vendors like Amazon.


!! Remember large online stores like Amazon have professional marketing departments that are responsible for these things and so why not learn from them.
 

In addition to the thank you for you custom and a order confirmation note you generally  find links and short explanations on:

  • Returns and cancellation policy
  • Tracking
  • Contact

You may also find special promotions added to the email (requires sophisticated system).
