Building Links Using DirectoriesThe first part of any link building campaign is to get links from web directories. The reason is that they are usually very quick to get, and can be of very high quality. However before you start you should acquaint yourself with the various directory and link types as some are of far more value than others Directory ModelsThere are currently three directory models being operated.
Directory TypesGeneral DirectoriesThese cover all topics and all countries and range considerably in quality. Local DirectoriesThese cover regions/cities and it is these types of directories that will eventually replace the yellow pages of the telephone world. There will however be many more of them, some stand alone and others provided as part of local Portal sites. These will become very important for local businesses as more and more people use the Internet for locating local businesses and services. Niche DirectoriesThese don't exist in the offline world (at least not for the general public). They are organised around a theme (e.g. Windsurfing) rather than a place. They are particularly important for websites/businesses that have a wide geographical appeal. Link Types and TimescalesSome directories use dynamically generate links and others use plain html links. If you are listing in a paid directory then also make sure it is plain html. How long you have to wait before your listing is approved depends on the directory. Paid directories tend to offer a quicker turnaround. Finding DirectoriesThere are two main techniques you can use for finding suitable directories. Here I will illustrate them using a wedding niche as an example. Using a Search EngineGo to Google and enter: wedding +directory + "addurl" or wedding +directory + "submit url" or similar and this is what you get:
Using an established directoryGo to a directory, like the DMOZ, and do a search for directories as shown below:
This is what you get:
Submitting Your Site to DirectoriesMost directories require that you submit to a category and you will need to select and navigate to the correct category before clicking the submit url button. Most directories will approve your listing only after your site has been vetted by an editor and so it is important that you site doesn't contain broken links and under construction banners i.e. it should be complete. Directories will require more information than the simple site url, what exactly they do require will depend on the directory and because you will be submitting to more than one directory it is a good idea to prepare as much of this information in advance as you can. See managing Directory submissions. Before you submit your site to a directory make sure you do it correctly RecommendationsBefore you submit your site to a directory make sure you do it correctly In the first few weeks that your site is online then get listed in one or two General directories either paid or free ( see directory list) and then add you site to either niche directories or local directories (or both) depending on your business. You are looking for around 6 links to get you started and after that although you can never have two many links, getting links by adding your site to directories is time consuming and so you may want to schedule an hour a month for the first 6 months to finding appropriate directories and adding your site. After you have added your site to about 10-20 directories you have probably exhausted all the worthwhile ones and should probably stop. Related Articles:
