Using RSS Feeds on A Web Page

RSS Feeds were meant to be read in an RSS reader either web based or Desktop based.

However webmasters soon saw that feeds from other sites would be very useful to incorporate into their own website.

This lead to a variety of methods to presenting RSS feeds on Web Pages. The common ways are

  • Using and Iframe
  • using Javascript
  • Using PHP or ASP script
  • Flash Widget

There were initially lots of claims made for including RSS feeds from other sites in your web pages by web marketers in the initial hype surrounding RSS.

However the real reason you would want to include other sites content on your site is to add value to your visitors. If you are going to do this then you should also be sure that you are allowed to use the feed in this manner.

If you want to add feeds from other sites into your web page then you will can use an external service that will create a JavaScript, php or widget version of the feed. Take a look at Feed2JS for a good JavaScript example and you will find a list of RSS tools here.

Adding Feeds From Your Own Site

A common variation on this is to display your own feed on your site. This is common with blogs were it is common to put a bog feed on the main site home page.

There are many online services that provide this functionality and some feed providers provide the tools to encourage you to display their feeds on your site.

If you use feedburner it comes with a few tools that allow you to incorporate your own feeds into web pages here is a JavaScript example that puts my blog feed on a web page.
