Uploading Web Pages Using the WS_FTP Graphical Client

 

There are many graphical FTP clients available for all platforms. Some are commercial, some free. Many web page editors (like NVu and Trellian) have a built in FTP client. Here I am going to demonstrate how to upload web pages using the WS_FTPLE client. This  is available as a free (for non-commercial use) download from the Internet (see resources below).

 There is also a commercial professional version available if you require commercial use. However; both products are available on a 30 day free trial. In these illustrations we will be using the LE (limited edition) version.

 1.      Start WS_FTP and complete the general setup tab giving details of the server and your account details see figure 3.  Help is available if you are unsure of what to fill in. The critical ones are host name/address, User Id and password. Don't forget to tick the save password box do that you want be prompted to enter this each time. See figure 3

 2.      To Change to the local directory that contains your local Web pages click chgdir tab and enter the target directory in this case c:\webs\byo as shown in Figure 4.

 3.      The contents of the selected directory are display in the left hand window see figure 5. 

 4.      If you want to automatically start in this local directory then select startup from the session properties screen and enter the local directory path as shown in figure 6.

5.      To connect to the Internet server click connect and ok see figure 7.

 You may need to manually start the dial up network connection from start menu/settings/network and dial up connections if it is not set to dial on demand. The remote server (your Website) is now shown in the right hand window see publishing-website-8

 6.      To copy files to the Website highlight them in the left hand pane and click the arrow as shown in figure 9.

7.      When finished click close to close the connection.
