Putting Personal Information on a Website

It you are building a personal/family website you should be careful about what information you make accessible to people that you don't know.

This is very important if you want to protect yourself from identity fraud and from unwanted attention.

But you should also be aware that other information like:

  • First school
  • Mothers Maiden Name
  • Pets Name
  • Town of Birth
  • Year of \Birth
  • University attended
  • First Job
  • Fathers Job
  • Spouses name
  • Names of Children
  • Phone Number
  • Address
  • etc
May seem like unimportant information but taken together it can be used to extract even more personal information.

If you must put personal information on your site then when at all possible password protect it. If you can't do that either for technical or practical purposes then don't use that information in any online/offline forms.

As an example. If you are filling out an online form for a bank, it is common that they want you to enter some security questions. You find a common one is- first school attended. If this information is on your website don't use it in the form; choose a different question.

Photos

Although many sites are created with the idea of sharing photos you should again be cautious especially if you are female and or young.
