Managing Directory Submissions
One of the most common tasks with websites is submitting them to search engines, directories and link exchange partners. When you do so you will need to fill out a submission form with your website details. Most people simply type the details into the form but doing so is very time consuming and not only that you can easily make a mistake resulting in different entries in different directories etc. A better way is to create a text file containing information that you can use when submitting to directories, search engines, and link partners. Once you have created the text file all you need to do is to copy and paste the information from notepad into the web form. The best way to show you this is to show you the text file I use for this site
Over the last 6 months there have been various search engine updates and there as been lots of talk of links being ignored that have the same anchor text. In the example above the title would be the anchor text and the directory would show a listing like this one below:
Therefore the current recommendation is to vary the anchor text slightly. So some directories would show the listing above others the one below:
How many variations should you have? I would say 2-4 variations should be enough and I would only use 2 initially and progress to using more as the site matures. Tracking Directory SubmissionsThere are thousands of directories that you will submit to and although you probably wont submit to thousands you will almost certainly submit to 10-50. Most directories especially the manually edited ones don't like it when you submit more than once. This is very easy to if you don't keep a record. I use Word but Excel (or equivalent) is just as good and because I have several sites my table is arranged as.
Because some directories supply you with a password so that you can make changes to your listings I include the detail in the notes Related Articles and Resources: |
