How Search Engines See Web Pages

When you view a web page you focus on the parts that are important to you. Although there are generally excepted patterns on how visitors scan/read web pages it is important to remember that we all see the page in different ways.

Search engines see the page the same way each time. They start at the top left and move to the bottom.

If we examine a typical single table layout sectioned with rows and columns as shown below:

Logo (1)

(3)

Content

Search engines will see the contents of the logo block (1) followed by the navigation block (2) and then the content block (3) and finally the bottom navigation block. (4).

Now one of the main aspects of web page optimisation is to get the main keywords to be seen by the search engine first, and hence they are placed in the opening headline.

In the case of the layout above the first thing that the search engines see is the logo. As this is usually a graphic then this doesn't interfere with our optimisation. The second thing they see is the left hand navigation, not our opening headline which is part of our main content block.

Therefore what we need to do is to get our main content block to be seen by the search engines before the navigation block. To achieve this we insert an empty cell (note sometimes a graphic) as shown in the layout below:

Logo  1

2

Empty cell

3

Content

Bottom Navigation  5

In the case of the layout above the first thing that the search engines see is the logo. The second thing they see is the empty cell which because it is empty or a graphic doesn't affect or optimisation. Then they see the main content (and our headline) which is what we want.

Checking your web Page

To check how your web page appears to the search engines you can use a search engine simulator. There are numerous free ones available on the Internet the ones I use are:
