Google Sitemaps
A Google Sitemaps is a specially formatted list of web pages on your website in XML format. Google then uses this list (Sitemap) to index your website. The sitemap is placed on your website and submitted to Google. Google then use the sitemap to crawl your website. The sitemap contains information about the pages like their relative priority and frequency of change which Google use to schedule the crawling of your website. What is not currently really known is exactly how this information is used and also if the presence of a Google sitemap affects the standard way Google crawls websites.
To generate the Sitemaps I recommend you use one of the many free tools. Google maintains a list here. The one I use is the Tarrant.it Sitemap Generator which is an online tool for creating Google sitemaps and also conventional sitemaps. Another free tool I have recently tried and was impressed how easy it was to use is The SOFTplus GSiteCrawler Google Sitemap generator. This tool installs on your PC and will even ftp the sitemap to your site when finished Currently most sitemap generation is manual which means that when you make changes to your website you will need to update your Google sitemap and upload it to your server just like you do with your conventional sitemap. I tend to schedule this for 2 times per month but if you make many frequent changes you should update your sitemap more frequently. The tool will also generate a conventional sitemap.
