Getting Your Website Listed in The Search Engines

To get found on the Internet you need to be listed in the Major Search engines-Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft Bing.

There are two ways of getting your site into the search engine index. They are:

  • Use the search engine addurl form
  • Getting your site listed on another site that is already in the search engines.

The Search Engine Addurl Form

The major search engines have a Website submitting page usually called addurl , where you can submit your Website for free.

However using the form isn't the best or quickest way of getting listed but if you want to see how it is done then it is covered in Using the Search Engine Addurl article.

Getting Listed on Another Website that is Already Indexed

A much better way of getting your site listed in the Search engines is to get listed on another Website that is already indexed.

Search engines  like to find sites themselves.

So in order for them to find your site then you need to get your site listed on another website.

The easiest way to do this is to submit your website to some directories.

Like search engines there are 1000s of directories and again you don't need to submit your site to all of them.

Initially I would only list with websites that don't require a back link and once I'd run out of those I would then target the others. However that's getting ahead a bit. All you are looking for at this moment is a link from a directory so that the search engines will find you.

Using this technique you can get indexed usually within a week, and if the directory is very popular in a day. Getting your site listed in directories is just like adding your site to search engines except that most directories will review your site.

Because your website will be reviewed make sure it is ready. This doesn't mean finished! just that it is tidy with no broken links, under construction pages, and that the pages you have, are themselves complete pages, not just the opening paragraph of a page that you will finish later.

Recommendations

Even though I have manually submitted most of my existing websites the technique I use on new sites is to add them to directories and to list them on my existing sites (link exchange). I no longer use the Addurl form.

So how do you get in the search engines in the first place. Well you simply submit your site! But is that the best way?

Submitting You Website to Search engines is free in most cases and isn't difficult.

The major search engines have a Website submitting page usually called addurl , where you can submit your Website for free.

Before submitting your Website it is a good idea to prepare a small text file with your Website details. This should  include the following:

By doing this you can save yourself a lot of typing as each time that your submit your Website to a search engine you will be asked to enter some or all of those details. Now when submitting your Website all you need to do is to copy and paste from your text file.

In addition to saving you time it also means that you avoid typing errors when submitting and also inconsistencies between search engines. If, when submitting to a particular search engine it asks for details that you don't have in your text file just add them there and you will have them for the future.

How Many Search Engines do You Submit To ?

One of the most common questions I get asked is how many search engines are there and do I need to submit to all of them? Well there are literally thousands of search engines and No - you don't need to submit to all of them, only to the top 3- Google,Yahoo, and MSN (links here).

So don't go and buy software offering to submit your site to 1000s or 100s of search engines- you don't need it!

How long Before You Get Listed?

Most people new to the web expect to submit their Website and then go to the search engine search page and search for it- hey presto- its there. No sorry-It doesn't work that way.

After submitting comes waiting, and that can be weeks and even months! Expect a minimum of 2 weeks maximum of 8 weeks for Google, Yahoo and MSN.
